Visually there are few noticable differences, the first being the rear check strap brackets, the early type using the tapped plate to fix the check strap, the latter uses "W" shaped braket. There should also be bracing on the bulk head rigger for late IIa's and the body mount for the front of the rear tub are in slightly different places, the later cars positioned slightly more inbound.

The major difference is the hand brake relay. The early models bolt through the chassis rail, however the later ones bolt to a bracket which is incorporated in to the chassis

Shows the difference between the early wider gussets on the #3  cross member and the narrow ones from the Series 3 chassis. This allows you to fit the later S3 full syncro gear box. We have found that over the years a lot of early cars have had the S3 gear box retro fitted  and the fitting of the later gussets allows this to happen without having to modify your new chassis. Please let us know if you would like this option by using the comments box on the order form.

This was the Land Rover that the army threw out of Hercules transport planes with varying degrees of success. its most notable feature is that it does not look like your classic Land Rover having slab sides, being narrower than a normal Land Rover and sharing not one common panel below the window line.

The chassis are also different being 2" narrower than a standard chassis. our chassis have the number 1 cross member which sits behind the bumper, oil cooler mounts, tie rod bracket, the military style seat belt mounts. The biggest difference to the civilian chassis is the rear cross member which is narrower in width and is just a plane oblong shape with mounts for the military style NATO hook. it also has extra gussets and bracing to impart more strength into the rear cross member for heavy towing capabilities.

Occasionally the rear cross member from this vehicle was used on civilian style vehicles to provide them with NATO hook for towing military loads.
