1948 - 1958
We currently manufacture all model years from the earliest 80” to the latest 109” Series 1
Originally designed for farming and light industrial use, the Land Rover Series 1 is now truly iconic. For many years, Richards Chassis has been working to develop the best and most authentic Land Rover Series 1 Chassis available.
We aim to produce an almost identical replica of your original chassis. To achieve this, we build to the chassis number, so your new chassis will be as it was the day it left the factory. If you have one of the many vehicles that were altered by numerous "Coachworks" to fulfil a specific role, then we at Richards Chassis can modify the chassis as the coachworks would have done in the day.
At Richards Chassis, we go above and beyond to create high-quality chassis that are as exceptional as the vehicle they are being created for. We have heavily invested in specialist tooling for the Land Rover Series 1 Chassis, which, in all likelihood, we will never recover the costs on. But to us, it is worth it, as these tools enable us to produce exact copies of the original parts.
Many of the vehicles we build chassis for have great historical automotive histories and we aim to keep this lineage going on into the future. Inevitably there comes a time when a chassis is beyond repair and this is where we have it covered.

1958-1985
We currently sell all of the Series 2 Land Rover chassis.
The Series Land Rovers were the vehicles that started it all for the Rover Company way back in 1948. And Richards Chassis was established around the manufacture of the Series chassis. When the Land Rover Defender came of age and the chassis on the "New" vehicles started to require replacement, most people thought the days of us still manufacturing Series chassis were gone. How wrong they were.
Today, many years on from the first replacement chassis we built, the 1984 Series II Land Rover chassis still makes up 40% of our total production. It goes to show just how brilliant the original design concept was, with no major design changes made until the introduction of the Defender 90 in 1984. If you are lucky enough to have a Land Rover model from the Series range, and you need a replacement chassis, you’re in the right place! We manufacture and custom-make replacement chassis for the 88 Station Wagon.
Minor refinements and improvements were carried out throughout the production life, some to improve the chassis, some to make it easier to produce. These changes are reflected in the Suffix Letter, which is at the end of the chassis number. Series vehicles are now becoming very collectable and sale prices are reflecting this, which is why we now build replica Series 2 chassis to the same standard and attention to detail as our Series 1 chassis.

1958-1985
We currently sell all of the Series 3 Land Rover chassis.
The first chassis we as a business built back in 1984 was a 109" Series 3 Station Wagon chassis. (read more about our story.) This chassis is still driving around the hills of Scotland having been passed down from father to son! We know because we recently had it back at our factory to give it a check-over. The chassis was acid stripped, crack-tested and regalvanized, ready to return under the car. Still no welding was required.
The Series 3 Land Rover 109" vehicle went through a myriad of small changes over the decades but the original chassis shape and layout remained basically unchanged throughout. Engines from 2.25-litre petrol and diesel through to the 2.6 litre 6-cylinder petrol and the 3.5 litre V8 were all fitted as standard through its production.
Add to that the many varied body types, from pickup and soft top in their most basic form, through to the Station Wagon, Military Ambulance and Sandringham 6x6 Armoured Patrol car. (Amazingly, they still used the original shape chassis rails despite weighing in at nearly 5 tonnes and having an extra axle added still within the original vehicle length!). The 109 was also used to develop the 110, the test "Hack" being the Stage 1 V8 with its modern Defender-style bonnet and grill.
At Richards Chassis, we have a range of replica chassis available for the Land Rover Series 2, Series 2A and Series 3 vehicles. Got a question? Don’t hesitate to reach out to our dedicated team. We’re always happy to help.

1983 - 2016
We currently manufacture the whole 90" Defender chassis range.
The 90 was introduced in 1984 as the successor to the 88". Despite the 90" name the wheel base was increased by almost 5 inches to 93", which gave the car a slightly larger rear load space. This allowed room on the chassis to fit the radius arms and coil spring suspension mounts and was the single biggest improvement made to the range in the whole 70 years of production. Despite this, once the chassis had been designed and introduced the basics did not change until production ceased in 2015. Modifications were made to introduce different engines, different radiators and intercoolers and to accommodate changes in fuel tank positions, but the basic chassis design and layout did not change - even the main chassis rails are 25" apart as per the Series 1 chassis. A case of "If it aint broke don't fix it"

1999-2004
We manufacture all 110" Defenders.
The 110 was introduced in 1983 as the successor to the 109". This was a development from the Stage 1 V8, now fitted with coil sprung suspension and was the single biggest improvement made to the range in the whole 70 years of production. Despite this once the chassis had been designed and introduced the basics did not change until production ceased in 2015. Modifications were made to introduce different engines, different radiator and intercoolers and to accomodate changes in fuel tank positions, Different body types were accommodated for by using bolt on mounting brackets specific to each body type, but the basic chassis design and layout did not change - even the main chassis rails are 25" apart as per the Series 1 chassis. A definite case of "If it aint broke don't fix it". Find your Defender 110 replacement chassis at Richards Chassis.
1999-2004
We manufacture all 130" Defenders.
The 130 was introduced in late 1983. This is a stretched 110 with 17" added to the wheelbase and an additional cross member added in the centre. Despite the 130 name the wheel base is actually 127", having said that there are some 130" wheel base vehicles which tend to reside in Europe. The chassis was originally a "Special Vehicles" product with the original 110 chassis being cut and specially designed extension pieces being added before rejoining. Because of our production techniques we are able to manufacture the rails in one piece, doing away with the joint in the middle of the chassis. Modifications were made to introduce different engines, different radiator and intercoolers and to accommodate changes in fuel tank types, Different body configurations were accommodated for by using bolt on mounting brackets and cross members specific to each body type, but the basic chassis design and layout did not change. 1999-2004
We manufacture all model years of Discovery 2 chassis’.
Richards Chassis had been asked on numerous occasions to build a Discovery 2 replacement chassis, and for a long time we resisted. It would seem that the Discovery 1 chassis does not rot but the body work does, Whereas the Discovery 2 had a relatively good body but the chassis seemed to rot for fun around the rear fuel tank and rear axle mounts. We eventually bowed to the pressure and produced the only Discovery 2 replacement chassis available. There is only 1 part used in common with our standard Defender and Series production, a spring seat, so there was hundreds of hours of drawing and prototyping before we had anything available to sell. There seems to be some love out there for the Discovery 2. They were made with the V8 petrol and TD5 diesel engines and were available in both manual and automatic transmissions. There was a major Facelift in 2003 at chassis number 3A and this did include a chassis change which customers need to be aware of when ordering.
1970-1996

We also manufacture custom and modified Land Rover chassis, including 6x6. If you have a project which requires something out of the ordinary we can help.
Over the years we have built exceptional custom chassis for some amazing projects. These include everything from a 130 8x8 chassis for a demo car used as an advertising tool, to an ultra lightweight Defender style chassis used for competition vehicles running 650 HP V8 engines with 40"" tyres on Spider Trax axles. We also cater for customers with more realistic ambitions, like restoring an old airport Fire Engine or a Bee Keeper who needed off road capabilty with a large load bed to deliver Bee Hives to remote moorland locations. We have also manufactured custom chassis for multi national companies producing heavily adapted vehicles, which push the original design concept way beyond its original construct. Whatever your project may be, the foundation for your vehicle concept will always be the chassis. We would be happy to talk to you to discuss your requirements and ambitions.
